Announcements

Laura is looking for assistance with FOLIO documentation (docs.folio.org) to help read over the content and do maintenance work on the wiki. There aren't necessarily deadlines or a large time commitment.

Documentation is currently Lotus. Morning Glory documentation will be released at the same time MG is.

PC update

This was a planning meeting for WOLFCon sessions. There was a question about how a session has a hybrid option. Will there be a zoom link? There will be streaming options from the hall like the keynote and working meetings. To participate virtually, you need to be registered. Registration is open until Friday for in-person and then the 1st day of the conference (08/31) for virtual attendance: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/wolfcon-2022-registration-298014518447?aff=Website

Bulk Edit

Presentation Slides

There will be a Bulk Edit session at WOLFCon, Aug. 31, 4 pm Central European Time (10pm ET). This is a hybrid session. The goal of the meeting is to provide an update on the status of Bulk Edit and high-level overview of the future plans. This will also be an opportunity to provide feedback.

UXPROD-3632: If we are being returned to the browse search results, it would be helpful if we returned to where we were in the result, maintain focus. → There will be a change in the UI in the browse and search. We need to make sure that when the user goes from browse list row, gets to the instance, and hits the back browser button, the user is returned to the search result. It is a question of maintaining focus on what was searched.

When you uploaded the file, where do you get the ID barcode list? For the demo, these barcodes were retrieved from an API call. You can also scan the barcodes into a file that will eventually be uploaded. The query function isn't implemented yet and this will be for later releases.

What happens to the holdings permanent location? In the demo, the permanent location was changed in the item. Support for FOLIO holdings records will be coming in Nolana. For MARC records support will come in 2024. There isn't an import way to update MARC Holdings - this needs to be done in quickMARC.

Browse Contributors

MARC Authority

Presentation slides

Browse Contributors: This pulls from contributors that appear in the instance record. This works similarly to browse subjects or call number. You can use next or previous to browse through the entire list.

Any indication if the contributor is primary or not? No there's no distinction being made. If you have the relator term you can guess the primary. Is there a use case for showing if the contributor is primary or not? This is something to look at.

If a contributor is in several records with different relator terms, what happens? What happens is that as long as the type is the same, the relator term includes all the terms in those records separated by a comma. If the type is different but the name is the same, there are different rows for each contributor type (personal, corporate, etc.).

MARC Authority: quickMARC has been updated to support optimistic locking. Error messaging has been improved. Deletion is now supported. Authority records don't have any links to any bib records so delete is a hard delete. In the future when there is linking, the link will be retained but not maintained. You can also now export authority records. The select all selects all per page which is a default of 100 search results per page.

When you select to export and it shows up in Data Export, how do you know which one is yours? Exports are linked to a user in Run By.

If you have a list of UUIDs from an external source such as LDP, can you still run that Export? Yes. It doesn't matter where you get your list of UUIDs. The list needs to be in csv format.

For Nolana: Changes will be made to quickMARC UI to improve usability and for the user to know which row you're taking action on. For delete, you will see that row with a message that it's been deleted and have a button to undo.

In Morning Glory you will see which fields are protected. It'll be on the far right of that row. Manual linking can be seen in the UI.

In Orcid support will be looked at automating the linking ability in quickMARC.

On Aug. 24, at 1pm ET, there is a join Data Import and quickMARC meeting to see how linking interacts with Data Import.

    I will!
17:43:32 Von  Jenn Colt  an  Alle:
    ty for thinking of it!
17:44:10 Von  Jennifer Eustis (she/her)  an  Alle:
Thanks Jenn and no worries Felix
17:54:05 Von  Khalilah  an  Alle:
    Maintain focus.
17:55:00 Von  Khalilah  an  Alle:
Is it the browser Back button?
18:06:11 Von  Laura (she/they)  an  Alle:
I really like the ability to download the errors. Very helpful for trouble-shooting.
18:06:39 Von  Jacquie Samples -- Duke  an  Alle:
    ++1 Laura
18:08:17 Von  Charlotte Whitt  an  Alle:
Magda, now I’m not so familiar with the Bulk edit app.
18:08:50 Von  Charlotte Whitt  an  Alle:
So how do you create the .csv file (items-barcodes-1.csv)?
18:09:26 Von  Adam Cottle  an  Alle:
I guess you could manually can them into a file with a barcode scanner
18:09:33 Von  Ann-Marie Breaux  an  Alle:
I'm jealous of the preview screen! not yet available for Data Import
18:09:34 Von  Adam Cottle  an  Alle:
    *scan them in
18:10:33 Von  Jacquie Samples -- Duke  an  Alle:
    Following Magda
18:10:56 Von  Jacquie Samples -- Duke  an  Alle:
What happens to the holding permanent location?  That is our source of truth for location, not the items
18:11:07 Von  Jessica Janecki  an  Alle:
@adam, scanning in barcodes from a truck of books you have at your desk is a pretty common workflow.
18:12:25 Von  Adam Cottle  an  Alle:
@jessica Right, I was thinking about how that was how my library used to work with Voyager. Voyager takes .txt files, and we would make them manually like you said.
18:13:18 Von  Jessica Janecki  an  Alle:
    @adam exactly!
18:14:15 Von  Jacquie Samples -- Duke  an  Alle:
@Adam and @Jessica another very common workflow is to generate a report of barcodes based on item status and then do this type of work.
18:14:37 Von  Adam Cottle  an  Alle:
Sure, that's what Felix meant when he mentioned LDP.
18:14:55 Von  Jacquie Samples -- Duke  an  Alle:
    ߑߏ
18:15:17 Von  Felix Hemme (ZBW)  an  Alle:
Maybe an option to scan the barcodes directly into Bulk Edit would save one step (create a csv first).
18:15:38 Von  Lynne Fors  an  Alle:
    +1 Felix
18:19:05 Von  Jenn Colt  an  Alle:
data import is separate and works for bibs
18:20:01 Von  Jacquie Samples -- Duke  an  Alle:
Sorry for conflating bulk import and bulk edit
18:20:59 Von  Ann-Marie Breaux  an  Alle:
That's a good idea, Felix - to be able to scan or copy/paste a list of barcodes/HRIDs/UUIDs into an input area of the Bulk edit app
18:21:08 Von  Jacquie Samples -- Duke  an  Alle:
Thanks Jenn, I am trying to think through all the scenarios.
18:22:13 Von  Jenn Colt  an  Alle:
    there's a metadata-scripting channel as well
18:22:33 Von  Jenn Colt  an  Alle:
    sorry metadata-management-scripting
18:22:36 Von  Ann-Marie Breaux  an  Alle:
Maybe we could make a list someplace of metadata API SMEs in our MM SIG wiki area?
18:23:20 Von  Ann-Marie Breaux  an  Alle:
Or more generally - MM SIG community members who are willing to be contacted/serve as a resource for various aspects of FOLIO?
18:23:27 Von  Felix Hemme (ZBW)  an  Alle:
    Good idea Ann-Marie.
18:24:13 Von  Jacquie Samples -- Duke  an  Alle:
    +1 Ann-Marie and Felix.
18:24:59 Von  Felix Hemme (ZBW)  an  Alle:
Let me figure something out in our wiki space and share the link in the notes.
18:25:10 Von  Ann-Marie Breaux  an  Alle:
One thing that makes me so happy now is having library staff who have a lot of experience with Data Import, so that they can help with a lot of the DI questions, especially when I'm slow to answer
18:25:50 Von  Jenn Colt  an  Alle:
People shouldn't be scared to use the learning-apis or metadata scripting channels though, there is a lot of value in asking things where others can see them
18:26:06 Von  Ann-Marie Breaux  an  Alle:
    +1 Jenn
18:27:05 Von  Ann-Marie Breaux  an  Alle:
Felix, maybe we could start with brainstorming a list of categories that SMEs are willing to help with, or make a grid, so that we can use (relatively) standard headings
18:27:48 Von  Charlotte Whitt  an  Alle:
    # metadata-management-scripting
18:27:59 Von  Jenn Colt  an  Alle:
Slack channels are always current if people just ask there (ok, I'll stop now, just not sure about creating more things to maintain)
18:29:05 Von  Ann-Marie Breaux  an  Alle:
Totally agree, Jenn - and the learning-apis one is really impressive at the amount of help folks provide!
18:31:02 Von  Felix Hemme (ZBW)  an  Alle:
@Jenn Having a page on the wiki with categories (APIs, mdm-reporting etc.) and the fitting Slack channel does sound reasonable as well, instead of listing people's names.
18:31:13 Von  Jennifer Eustis (she/her)  an  Alle:
Does it also show if the contributor is primary or not?
18:32:22 Von  Jenn Colt  an  Alle:
    that sounds great felix
18:33:38 Von  Jennifer Eustis (she/her)  an  Alle:
It would be great to filter on primary or not
18:35:32 Von  Jennifer Eustis (she/her)  an  Alle:
It could be helpful to get lists for donors or authors at our institutions that are the primary author. We get asked that a lot
18:43:36 Von  Felix Hemme (ZBW)  an  Alle:
Is the file in Data Export associated to the user who created the export or is it visible to any user?
18:47:28 Von  Colin V. (he/him)  an  Alle:
I love the trash can to the left!
18:48:02 Von  Jennifer Eustis (she/her)  an  Alle:
    +++1
18:48:06 Von  Adam Cottle  an  Alle:
The catalogers at my library will love the consolidation of action icons :)
18:56:08 Von  Ann-Marie Breaux  an  Alle:
Who knew trashcans could evoke so much passion!
18:56:29 Von  Jacquie Samples -- Duke  an  Alle:
    ߘ
18:56:39 Von  Sara Colglazier  an  Alle:
    Call me Oscar!
18:57:13 Von  Rita Albrecht  an  Alle:
Hope that some day a bib-authority linking will also be possible for non-MARC data!
18:57:57 Von  Natascha Owens (she/her)  an  Alle:
    that's right, Khalilah
18:58:08 Von  Charlotte Whitt  an  Alle:
+ 1 Rita. The Entity Management WG will have a session at WOLFcon
18:58:41 Von  Charlotte Whitt  an  Alle:
That session is lead by Jason Kovari (Cornell) and Christie Thomas (uchicago)
18:58:43 Von  Felix Hemme (ZBW)  an  Alle:
Keep the available actions next to the data
18:58:50 Von  Sara Colglazier  an  Alle:
We have been clicking in the field, which makes it get a bluish frame and then you know what you are deleting
19:00:26 Von  Colin V. (he/him)  an  Alle:
+1 to how Felix is describing it.  In quickMARC, the field tags are important to us, so having actions near it is key.  In Bulk Edit, we might have different priorities when it comes to action icon placement.
19:01:04 Von  Natalie Sommerville  an  Alle:
Thank you for the updates and demos, Magda and Khalilah.
19:01:05 Von  Ann-Marie Breaux  an  Alle:
Undo can be really helpful if you've made edits in the bib and then mark a row or two for deletion. If I can undo, I won't lose all those other edits (which would happen now if I cancel)
